As we was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop – a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. The History of the Idea of a Literal Connection between the Words “Ahmad” and “Paraclete” in the Qur’an and the Gospel of John
In recent years, some people, comparing the word “Ahmad” in a Quranic verse speaking of Jesus’ prophecy about Prophet Muhammad (Qur'an 61:6) with the word “Paraclete” in the Gospel of John (14:26, etc.), have tried to make a connection between them. They have ascribed to Muslims (and even to the Prophet himself) the idea that the word “Paraclete” is a distorted form of the word “periclete</...

متن کاملOn the Gospel Accounts of Peter’s Denials of Christ
The event of Peter’s denials of Christ is a frequent subject of Sunday sermons. The prediction and outplaying of the denials, as recorded in the four Gospels, is a powerful reflection of a condition of our relationship with Christ—that our faith is more vulnerable than we care to admit.1 But a small thorny issue surrounds the Gospel accounts of this event, one that is a nagging distraction to s...
متن کاملSalvation in Mark
It is interesting that the terms σωτρ and σωτηρíα (except in Mark 16:21) are not used in Mark. Although the terms "salvation" and "saviour" are absent from Mark, the role of "saviour" is not. The verb σζω occurs in 3:4; 5:23,28,34; 6:56; 8:35; 10:26,52; 13:13,20; 15:30-31 (and 16:16). It is also generally accepted that the passion of Jesus plays a very important role in this Gospel, and Kähle...
